Dear Members of the IDOCDE Community,

We are one week away from the 2020 IDOCDE symposium MAKING PLACE TAKING SPACE, which is going to be taking place online and which is going to be activated across time-zones. 

Most of the scheduling has been organised around Team IDOCDE’s capacity to stay present in our roles as hosts and managers of the event. We will be tuning in from Istanbul, Lyon, and Stockholm, the state of Arizona, and Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. The parameter that decided the rest was the questions: how can we make it possible for most of the content to be available to most of the attendees, no matter where they will be tuning in from?

We recommend all attendees update their IDOCDE profiles (which is why you will not find biographies embedded in the symposium program). The IDOCDE profile can function as your business card during the time of the symposium. Uploading a biography and work samples to your IDOCDE profiles is advisable.

• You can find the list of the 2020 IDOCDE symposium DOCUMENTATION FOLDERS here. The list of folders will be updated daily. Each folder corresponds with one event. Please add your documentation of the specific events to the appropriate folder.

SYMPOSIUM UPDATES! (2020 07 21)

The hosts of VIRTUAL PLACE FOR TAKING SPACE #3 would like to work with a maximum number of 25 participants, which includes the hosts. The session will revolve around the game called The Art of Wearing a Tablecloth, created specifically for this occasion. Find out more about the game before signing up here. Please, sign up HERE. This year’s program has taken a long time to develop as it’s been difficult to plan and take action far in advance due to the consequences of the global pandemic. We, the organising team and everyone involved in creating symposium content, have embraced this as an opportunity to work differently from what we’re used to: we’ve did (and continue to do) our best to anticipate less and make more decisions in response to the ever-changing capacity of any and every person involved. Working with these principles made for a chaotic process that challenged our every anticipatory and evaluative habit that would, under normal circumstances, probably be perceived (assumed) as a good thing; a normal thing, a helpful thing, a reasonable thing, a casual that’s-in-everyone’s-best-interest thing.

And so, here we are, seven days away from the beginning of this year’s symposium, still making adjustments in the schedule on a daily basis, working between time-zones––barely confident enough that we’re getting it right. (Maybe I should speak for myself, as I seem to be the particularly confused one. I am yet to figure out how to be able to visualise the global time-zone division relative to the date line, to the people moving in places east and west, north and south from each other, and events scheduled to take place at the same time and at a different time at the same time.)

The links set in this Editorial will remain live and will be updated regularly through the duration of the symposium. We, Team IDOCDE, will make every attempt to focus all our communication through the IDOCDE website, in the attempt to reduce messaging to a minimum and the chance for information to change without acknowledgement. When all is said and done, please remember that IDOCDE is a community driven project: it exists because of you. You are the receptor and the stimulator, the gift receiver and the gift giver, you are where knowledge goes to and where knowledge comes from. You are the experience, our experience of IDOCDE. You are the reason we are (still) here!
