Self Reflection and Evaluation

The questions I’ve listed below are some suggestions, intended to trigger contemplation. The idea is to reflect upon the process of making your solo. This exercise is primarily for you, and your own development. However, it is also generally required in the field if you make a production, receive subsidy, have a residency, or are awarded a grant for study or research.

There are no correct answers. You don’t need to answer every question I have included, and you may have other information you want to add, for instance from your own documentation of the process. The only real requirement is some thorough and honest consideration. Write around one page of text, and send it to me by ArtEZ email by Monday May 21.

Questions for Reflection

In relation to what you planned to do (your concept) where did you end up?
Did anything change along the way? What? And how did you adapt to this?

What was the most challenging part of the process?
What was the most surprising? The most inspiring? The most confronting?
Were there any pivotal moments in the process?
What were your difficulties? What did you need/do to overcome them?
What were your victories? How did they come about?
Were there thing(s) for which you didn’t find a solution/answer?

How was the process of choosing and integrating the technical aspects of your piece (light/sound/the theater space)?
How was the experience of performing your work for an audience?
Did the dialogue with your public provide any new/additional information about what you were aiming to accomplish or communicate?
What kind of feedback was helpful to hear from the public?

Along the way, what did you discover? About making dances? About yourself and your own way of being/working? Or about dance/theater as a medium?
Are there things you’d like to continue investigating/ working on as a result?
Are there things you’d consider doing differently next time you make own work?
What do you take away with you from this process?
How will you work with these realizations in the future?
